Understanding Quality assurance principles is an important first step in establishing a QA function. Before diving into the details of creating a quality assurance function within your organization, it’s vital to understand and internalize a few key points.
You first have to be sold on the value of creating quality initiatives and following through when the going gets rough.
With this in mind, let’s review the 3 key Quality assurance principles as defined by one of the original quality gurus, Philip B. Crosby:
1. Management is responsible for quality
The decision makers have the task of driving the quality function. They must ensure that the necessary investments in time, money, and resources are applied to the effort.
2. Producers must use effective quality control
Effective quality control procedures must be created, implemented, and maintained to monitor product development and ensure that the desired level of quality is maintained throughout the process.
3. Quality is a journey, not a destination.
Referring back to principle #1 above, regarding the continuous promotion of quality initiatives, quality is not a “one and you’re done” kind of activity. It’s an on-going effort to create great products and happy customers. In addition to these 3 foundational QA principles, there are some other basics that all quality assurance professionals should be aware of:
